Slide 27 of 61
Notes:
If students are reading the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, in language arts class and have access to copies of the book, consider giving students time to find the needed information on their own. In this book, Hagrid takes Harry to Diagon Alley to purchase his school supplies. Their first stop is Gringotts, the wizard bank. As Harry stares at the piles of coins, Hagrid explains that the galleons are worth 17 sickles each and that the sickles are worth 29 knuts.
If time is limited, ask students who have read the book if they can recall the needed information. These are non-standard units and as such will be difficult for students to recall. Be sure that all students are using the correct amounts before they continue to solve the problem.
