The Standards
Teaching by the standards requires
- A deeper conceptual understanding of core content
- The application of that understanding in 'real-world' situations.
Notes:
Real-World problems are difficult to create because the story lines that are of interest to students are not necessarily the same for adults. Teachers need to enter the world of the students. Find the story context that is relevant to students and then wrap the mathematical content around that story line.
The Harry Potter books are so well written that most adults find them enjoyable to read. The adventures of Harry and his friends are so varied that there are many opportunities to address mathematical content.
