The journey starts at an amusment park in central Pennsylvania during the summer of 1967. I was hired to help the merry-go-round operator on weekends, and run the ride myself on weekdays. The ride's procedure included duties which required jumping on and off while the ride was in motion and walking around the deck to collect tickets. All of this usually needed to be done while the thing was moving at full speed: about 5rpm for a 50ft. diameter carousel. It was very difficult at first to walk on the ride's deck while it was in motion. It took a lot of practice and patience but the old timer that ran the ride on weekends assured me that this was normal.
