It was an exciting, down-to-the wire finish in this year's competition, with 16 participants battling for the bragging rights in this year's pool. Todd Ruth, who according to Andy knows nothing about movies, made an early charge for the title, and was the man to beat throughout the evening. He was still facing stiff challenges from Misty, Angie and Andy, who were tied or one point behind among the Ephrata pools.
Meanwhile, the pools in Lititz were struggling. Steve Benner had an early charge with his masterful selection of Crouching Tiger for art direction and Traffic for editing, giving him an early lead. But the middle awards killed his chances.
Things got interesting near the end, as we awaited Best Director and Best Picture, as at least eight of the contestants near the top were within two points of the winner. Most had selected Gladiator as Best Picture and Ang Lee as Best Director.
So when Steven Soderberg won Best Director, Rick - who was nowhere near the leaders until Traffic and Almost Famous won screenplay awards - suddenly found himself tied for the lead - and poised for a shocking victory, if Traffic could win Best Picture as well.
Meanwhile, Andy Fasnacht hoped for a Crouching Tiger victory, which would have given him the overall victory.
Of course, neither movie won, and Rick finished in 8th place as a result, while Andy may or may not have backed into the winner's circle with 18 points. Andy, Misty and Angie each finished with 18, though we are not sure who won the tie breaker. One thing is for sure, a Fasnacht will win it.
Congratulations, Todd! And congrats to whichever Fasnacht won the award, keeping their family name in the winner's circle, while keeping the Reitz name out for the second year in a row. (Early reports that Lisa had tied Todd proved unfounded when it was discovered that she had incorrectly received two points for Ang Lee as best director. This, obviously, did not happen.)
