School related Issues - Head Injuries and Concussions

"A study published last year in The American Journal of Sports Medicine examined severe head injuries among high school football players between 1989 and 2002. The researchers found that high school players had more than triple the risk of sustaining catastrophic head trauma compared to college players. High school athletes suffered 0.67 such injuries per 100,000 players, compared with 0.21 injuries per 100,000 college players." Dementia Risk Higher for NFL Players, MedicineNet.com

This site is not affiliated with Selinsgrove Area School District and does not reflect the official position of the Selinsgrove Area School Board.

I raised the issue of how we manage students with head injuries or concussions and planned to conduct an Extracurricular Committee meeting to consider a proposed policy that would require students who suffered a a loss of consciousness or head injury to stop playing in the game or practicing. They would need physician clearance to resume practice or play. It also called for student athletes and parents to receive information developed by the CDC regarding head injuries.

Dr. Johnson told me that the proposed policy was current practice in the district. He preferred to establish a procedure to handle the issue. He assured me that student safety is a priority with him. He will also have the coaches give the CDC head injury information to the student athletes and their parents.
