Windows 98: The Clean Install

Skip the CD - Installing Win98 from your hard drive

An alternative to installing Windows 98 directly from the Windows 98 Upgrade CD-ROM which some Aptiva owners have used is to copy the Win98 folder from the CD to drive C and run it from there. In addition to speeding up the install process a bit this has also helped in some cases where users initially had problems installing directly from CD.

This option requires XCOPY.EXE to be present on your boot disk.

4- Installing Windows 98

(A) Insert your boot disk in your floppy disk drive
(B) Insert the Windows 98 Upgrade CD in your CD-ROM drive
(C) Tap CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart the computer
(D) Once at an A:\> prompt type C: and tap [ENTER]
(E) Type MKDIR WIN98 and tap [ENTER]
(F) Type XCOPY G:\WIN98 C:\WIN98 /S and tap [ENTER]
NOTE: the command above assumes a CD-ROM drive letter of G:
(G) When the copy process completes remove the Win98 CD
(H) Type C:\WIN98\SETUP and tap [ENTER]
(I) The Windows 98 setup should initialize and run.

NOTE: After installing Windows 98 the C:\WIN98 folder can be
deleted to recover the free disk space.
