Madison was the first of twelve children born to Seymour and Dinah LaFave Baxter. He was born in Canada and moved to the United States with his parents and four siblings when he was 12 years old. On January 17, 1861, at the age of 23, he married Margaret Shelly, ten months before his youngest sibling, William was born. Madison was listed as a farm laborer in the 1870, 1880 and 1890 U. S. censuses. He and Margaret raised their four children in Leray, Jefferson county, New York, about 6 miles from his parent's farm. |
After his beloved wife died at the age of 45 in 1887, Madison lived with his daughter Mary Ann (Minnie) Baxter Chase in another small Jefferson County town nearby, Wilna, NY. Madison died in Watertown, NY. Madison,his wife and children are frequently mentioned in his sister Lena's diaries. They were Sunday dinner guests and helped on the farm. |
