ZION M. E. CEMETERY
(now Zion Mennonite Church Cemetery)
Robeson Township, Berks County, PA

My interest in this cemetery is founded on the great number of BITLER family members buried here.  Around 1736, Johannes Bitler came from the Palatines of Germany to the port of Philadelphia on-board the ship Harle.  After arriving in America, Johannes moved north and settled on a tract of land near Beckersville, Robeson Township, Berks County, PA and began his family.  The Zion M. E. Cemetery is supposedly built on land that was then owned by and donated by the Bitler family when the church was established around 1785.  While some of the Bitler family stayed in Robeson Township, others moved on to Schuylkill County, then on to Columbia and Montour Counties, and later to Ohio, and Kansas.  The Zion M. E. Cemetery holds a number of the graves of the early Bitlers that remained in Robeson Township.  Descendents of the Bitler family are still present in Robeson Township, Birdsboro, and the Reading/Berks area.  There are approximately 40 other Bitler family members (descendents of the original Bitlers) buried at the St John's Cemetery in Gibraltar.  I am (to the best of my research) the 7th great-grandson of Johannes Bitler, and I grew up just a few miles from this cemetery.
