HATTON FINNSHEEP
NORTHEAST PENNSYLVANIA
In 1996 Martha had quints in the spring and quads in the fall of the same year - - nine lambs in one seven month period. By the fall of 2001, Martha had had 41 live lambs.
We kept Curly, one of Martha's 1994 quads. She was four years when she was killed by a black bear. She had had 14 lambs and was pregnant when she was killed. (350% lambing record)
Annika and Grillka were two of Martha's 1996 quints. Both
carried the gene for recessive black. Annika had quints in the spring
of 1999 and twins the fall of the same year. Annika was killed by a
black bear in May of 2001.
Grillka was a very productive ewe. She'd had 23 lambs by age seven. Her Thor daughters are particularly impressive.
We kept Grillka's fall 2001 daughter, Silke, two of her 02 daughters and one of a set of quints from 03.
Our herdsire, Thor, is from the Stillmeadow Finnsheep Flock of Larry and Elizabeth Luke of New York. He is a quint out of a very productive dam. His dam, Helvi, had quads at 19 mos., then a single and then the quints of Thor's litter. One of his half sisters from Helvi's first lambing, Hyacinth, lambed trips unassisted at 16 months and had quads in 2000. Thor's line also includes color. Both Martha and Annika had black lambs when bred to Thor.
Thor is descended on one side of his pedigree from Clifford Hatch's line of Finns that were selected as heavy milkers.
