The Philmont trek is a physically and mentally demanding backpacking trip, covering many miles over rugged territory, with significant elevation changes, and periods at high altitudes. Boys and adults that want to go on the trek are expected to make a commitment to a training and conditioning program. To neglect this commitment not only puts the individual at risk, but also puts the entire group at risk of interrupting their trek.

Scouts must be 14 years old by January 1, 2003.

Total estimated cost is $1,200. This includes the Philmont fee, transportation, lodging, meals and sightseeing before and after the trek. Deposits and fees will be required at certain times before the trek, and those payments are non-refundable, but can be transferred to scouts on the waiting list. In addition, there will be some expenses involved in getting personal gear for the trek, such as proper hiking boots, a framed backpack, and other equipment and clothing.

There are certain medical exam requirements and height/weight requirements, as well as other kinds of risks involved in the trek as described in the Philmont Risk Advisory Statement (PDF file).

Participation Requirements:

Scout participation will be prioritized by age and then rank. Adult priority by BSA leadership training and tenure as a troop leader. The crew will be selected from scouts and adult leaders who pay the initial deposit. A waiting list will be created if more than 9 scouts and/or 3 leaders sign up. The $50 deposit will be returned to those on the waiting list. Scouts or adults who do not pay the required deposits on time or fail to follow the conditioning program will forfeit their reservation to those on the waiting list.
