ARNOLD FAMILY BURIAL GROUND
Hamilton Twp., Monroe Co., PA

Aka.: Werkheiser's Graveyard, Eyer Graveyard. This very old family burial site is located just north of Metzger Road, south of the village of Sciota. Starting at Sciota on Business Route 209, drive south toward Saylorsburg. After passing the Township School on the right, turn left at the first road on the left which will be Metzger Road. Park anywhere near the intersection. Walk north through the field to a wooded, brushy area. The cemetery is in the woods surrounded and overgrown with thick brambles and brush. There are 33 tombstones with names and dates and about four or five stones with only initials and the year of death. Dates on the tombstones indicate that this burial site was used between 1821 and 1897. Many early members of the Arnold family are buried here including members of several Murphy and Werkheiser families who were related to the Arnolds through marriage.

It is believed, but has not been proven, that this graveyard was also known as "Eyers". The record of deaths and burials of the Hamilton Church show four persons buried at "Eyers"; Elizabeth Paul, Sophia Engler, Henry Tittle and Freeman Bond. No tombstones have been found at this graveyard for any of these four people. However, the 1870s atlas of Hamilton Township shows a "J. Eyer" living adjacent to the graveyard. Therefore, the site may have been on the Eyer farm and named after that family. Also, in 1870, just up the road are "J. Tittle" and "L. Tittle" who could be related to Henry Tittle. Lastly, there is a tombstone in this graveyard for Samuel Paul, who was Elizabeth Paul's husband.
