Washingtonia #2 (filibusta mostly filifera)
![]() |
June 2005 I purchased this palm on eBay as a 1 gallon plant. It was advertised as a "true Washingtonia filifera." |

September 2006 It survived the winter in my greenhouse. I wanted to enjoy it in the garden for the summer, so I sunk the pot in the ground. See it hiding in the center of the picture? It looks like its planted, but it's not. |

October 2007 I decided to plant this palm in the ground in the early spring of 2007. It spent the summer getting acclimated to its new home and I was happy with its progress. It's probably not a pure filifera, but it is showing many of the traits: lots of hairs, slightly less teeth, slightly grayer leaves, more compact form, more cold hardy this upcoming winter, etc. |

December 2007 A look at the finished product of full winter protection. For more details, go here. Unfortunately, I was a little late at getting the protection in place. This palm experienced 18 degrees one night before getting its cover. This was a huge mistake because it defoliated the whole plant and it had to start making new leaves inside the enclosure. |

April 2008 This is what it looked like when it emerged from its cocoon. Not very nice, but it looked alive. The 18 degree night was not very good for its health. |

October 2008 Here's 5.5 months of growth. It started out very slowly, but each new leaf makes the following emerge even faster. Obviously, it's barely as big as the size it was last fall. Seeing this problem makes me very sure that I will protect it even better next winter. |

October 2009 Unfortunately I don't have a great picture of this palm this fall. Once the first freeze hit I never took any more pics. Now it's covered in its hut so no pics again until spring. It definitely grew pretty well this season, but it didn't really add much height. I'm still protecting it in the same 6' tall enclosure as I did last year. It definitely added quite a bit of trunk girth, so this also leads me to believe it has strong filifera traits. It's hiding directly in the center of the picture. |

November 2010 From July 4th on, this palm was in the shadow of my jungle, but every year it gets more and more visible on its own. The spread on this palm is unbelievable - over 13', and it's just a baby. Pics here before and after fall trimming to get ready for winter protection. For reference, the fence is 6' tall. |
