Washingtonia #3 (filibusta mostly robusta)
![]() |
June 2005 I purchased this palm on eBay as a 1 gallon plant. It was also advertised as a "true Washingtonia filifera." |

September 2006 It survived the winter in the greenhouse. I wanted to enjoy it in the garden for the summer, so I set the pot on the ground in the garden. See it hiding right? |

October 2007 I decided to plant this palm in the ground in the early spring of 2007. It spent the summer getting acclimated to its new home and I was happy with its progress. This Washingtonia was even farther from its name (filifera) because it looks like lots of robusta to me. We'll see what it looks like in a few years. |

December 2007 A look at the finished product of full winter protection. For more details, go here. Unfortunately, I was a little late at getting the protection in place. This palm experienced 18 degrees one night before getting its cover. This was a huge mistake because it defoliated the whole plant and it had to start making new leaves inside the enclosure. Watching the palm's reaction to the serious cold also helped verify that it was more of a robusta than my other one. It was hurt much worse. Not only have fewer leaves come out so far this summer, but first 3 leaves were severely deformed. |

April 2008 This is what it looked like when it emerged from its cocoon. The 18 degree night was very damaging to it. I could see a trace of green inside the stem, but I wasn't sure if it was alive. After about 3 weeks, I noticed the burnt, emerging spear was pushed out about an inch. Movement is good because it's growing! |

October 2008 Here's 5.5 months of growth. You can see the deformed leaves that came out when it was trying to recover from the cold damage. |

August 2009 Definitely grew better this year since it survived the winter with almost no damage. Only the outermost few leaves that were touching the plastic got some burnt areas on them. This palm prefers to grow upwards much more than the other filibusta which seems to grow outward. This makes me believe it has strong robusta traits. This winter I'll protect it with an 8' enclosure instead of last winter's 6' enclosure. Too bad I never took a pic after first freeze to show it by itself. You can still get a good idea of its size. It actually doesn't look that much bigger in this pic than last year, but remember, this pic was taken on Aug. 3rd, so it had 2+ more months of growth before being protected. |

November 2010 Still pretty good growth. This tree definitely has a different growth habit when compared to the other Washingtonias. Pics before and after fall trimming to get ready for winter protection. For reference, the fence is 6' tall. |
