The basis for Buddhism are  the four noble Truths, as laid out by Siddhartha Gautama (Prince of India 2500 years ago and first Buddha). It is a practical outline to ethical and mental development with the goal of freeing the individual from attachments of the physical world and ultimately leads to enlightenment, The Eight fold path, or the eight sided Jewel, each fold or side is dependant of the others and one must practice all the steps the reach Nirvana, and the  Ten Precepts which is Buddhism in practice.
