This is the ancient alphabet most commonly used in divination, and it has uses  in amulets, spells, and various other Magickal purposes. On this page I'll go through the symbols, and what they mean, as well as methods of divination. This grouping of Runes in known as the Elder Futhark (foo-thark)  so named because of the first 6 letters- F, OO, TH, A, R, and C.

The most common way the Runes are presented is called the "plow" formation. It is uncertain if there was any significance to this formation.

Divination using Runes

The most common, and accurate, use of the runes is to put all the rune stones into a bag, and run your hand through them while thinking your question, then dumping the runes out in front of you.  The runes that land face up are the ones read.  The ones closest to you represent your present path. The others are the solution, and advice.  In divination, the meanings are slightly different than if you were simply using individual runes.  And there is the addition of a blank rune stone.  This blank stone is called Odin's Rune, or Wyrd.

Rune	Name	Divination Meaning
	Fehu	Usually means earned income, or gaining personal possessions. If it is reversed, it means the loss of prosperity, or anything that one has worked to gain and keep.  If it drawn with negative runes, it means to conserve what one has.
	Uruz	Strength, good health, advancement but only if one works hard. If it is drawn reversed it means illness, or ones vitality is low.
	Thurisaz	Strongly associated with Protection and Luck (especially if drawn with Eihwaz and/or Algiz).  Often means an important decision is pending. If drawn reversed is means one must be wary of any decisions that need to be made.
	Asuz	Communication is paramount. Learning and acquiring wisdom. Be on the look out for a lesson to be learned. If this rune is reversed, warns of lies and trickery.
	Raido	This rune symbolizes movement, be it a journey, or within a career or oneself. anything one undertakes is sure to bring pleasure.  If reversed, it warns of a rough journey that will require a lot of patience.
	Kano	This rune urges one to open up to new strength, or power. This is a protective rune and tells of good things coming into ones life.  If drawn reversed, it warns that something is coming to an end, and tells the reader not to cling to it because ultimately it will be better.
	Gebo	This symbolizes a partnership of some kind be it personal or business. it tells of an important positive development. There is no reverse for this Rune.
	Wunjo	This rune indicates success, and indicates happiness coming into one's life. If there was a question regarding the object of one's affection, this rune may represent that person. Some activity with this person will have happy results. Reversed, this rune means there will be disappointment and loss of affections. The advice of this rune reversed is to be cautious.
	Hagas	This is the rune of unexpected disruptions. It indicates limitations and delays. Drawing this rune indicates that the forces at work  are beyond one's control.  There is no reverse for this Rune
	Nautiz	Now is a time for patience. Poor health, feelings of oppression and the like will work out in there own time. Think twice before taking on any new projects. Focus on spirituality rather than physical comforts. Reversed, this rune warns that the reader may not be on the right path, and any endeavor is destined to fail if changes are not made.
	Isa	Wait for improved conditions or more enthusiasm before continuing a project.  It may tell of a relationship cooling off (the kind of relationship depends on the runes around it) Unless this rune is paired with reversed love runes, relationship problems will be resolved soon, but in a strongly negative runecast, the relationship or project is no longer salvageable and the advice of this rune is to move on. No reverse
	Jerra	What you put into your world will eventually come back to you. This is the rune of the harvest. In a positive reading, it indicates a time of reaping the rewards of one's efforts. The repayment of money and favors will come now. This rune has jurisdiction over justice and legal issues. Drawing this rune should be a reminder that events take time. There may be delays regarding legal issues or finances or the home. No reverse
	Eihwaz	another rune of protection. Drawing this rune indicates that one is striving for a reasonable target and can achieve one's goals. There may be a slight obstacle, delay or minor problems. But it won't cause too much trouble. The obstacle or delay may very well prove beneficial. No Reverse
	Perth	a rune of mystery. It involves hidden things, secrets and occult abilities. Drawing this rune is a good indication that something that has remained hidden is about to come to light. Perhaps there will be a disclosure of some secret. Unexpected gains and surprises are indicated. Reversed, this runes warns not to expect too much now. Events won't turn out as expected. Obstacles, as well as unpleasant secrets and surprises are indicated.
	Algiz	The predominant rune of protection. It tells of a fortunate new influence entering one's life. Trust your instincts now since they will hit the mark. Friendships are in the picture, either new or old friends will provide useful assistance.  Reversed, it indicates vulnerability. a sacrifice might be needed with no gain. Someone may be deceiving or misleading you. Be on guard for trouble from any direction.
	Sowelu	a rune of victory, health, and success. It indicates a time when power will be available to you for positive changes in your life.  no reverse.
	Teiwaz	a rune of victory and success in any competition. You're ready to fight for what you believe in. Unless many negative runes are in the cast you will succeed. Now is a time when you are feeling extremely motivated. This rune indicates strength and will power. Reversed this rune is an indication of failure in competition. If the question is involving a romance, the man in the relationship is not being honest (with himself, or his partner)
	Berkano	The family rune. This rune refers to a happy family event, or the formation of an idea. This rune represents new beginnings, a new project or romance, something that will bring you happiness.  Reversed, this Rune indicates family problems.
	Ehwaz	Traveling, a change of occupation or maybe a new dwelling place, a change for the better. Gradual development and steady progress are indicated.  Reversed, this rune is a good indication that you are feeling restless or confined in a situation.
	Manaz	The rune of assistance and teamwork. You can expect to receive some sort of aid or cooperation now. Possibly in the form of good advice. this rune appearing reversed tells you to expect no help now.
	Laguz	a feminine rune of intuitive knowledge. Whenever you draw this rune it is advising you to follow your intuitions. Psychic ability is high.. This rune represents good memory and success in learning. It shows use of your imagination.  Reversed this rune is an indication of a period of confusion in your life. You may be making wrong decisions and misjudgments that will adversely affect your actions.
	Inguz	a rune of completion, it represents a time in your life when all your loose strings are tied and your are free to move in a new direction. No reverse.
	Dagaz	the rune of growth and increase. There are no negative aspects to this rune. It shows an inner strength that can be used during difficult times. This rune counteracts against delay runes. It shows slow and steady growth and progress. indicates the dawning of a new day full of hope and optimism. This rune could indicate a major change in your life (one for the better). No reverse.
	Othila	the rune of possessions. It represents items that you have or will acquire. Often represents that which you have inherited, including property, possessions and character traits. reversed, this rune indicates delay and frustration.  Loss in the areas of your possessions is shown. There may be legal problems or maybe the changing of a will.
	Odin's Rune	This blank Rune represents the unknowable. It is the past, present and future. This rune represents all knowledge. This is the cosmic power of fate. Drawing this rune indicates that you are in immediate contact with your own true destiny.
