We adopted Tinky, on my birthday in 2000. She named herself almost immediately when Raven accused her of using "Ferret Glamour". Which got us talking about Faeries. And he concluded that she must be a faerie (but I think that was just his excuse for allowing me to adopt her). As soon as I walked into the store, something made us go into the small animal room, which Raven usually tries to keep me away from, but this time he just followed me in. And there, just getting ready to curl up and sleep was a beautiful baby Silver. She blinked up at me and that was it... I had to get her. Very seldom do I come across an animal that strikes me so, while I love them all, only certain ones 'speak' to me.... and she was Screaming! So maybe it was Glamour...
At first she was a Momma's girl, She'd cuddle under my hair, or sleep on my lap, and she'd only wrestle and play with me, and practically ignored Raven. She would come running to me when one of the bigger ferrets decide to beat up on her (which Sugar did a lot of). She and Kit were bestest-buds, and she showed him all the good stuff.... like where the hidey hole was, how to beat up Bear, how to climb the side of the cage, the furniture. Tinkerbell (or Stinker-bell) is an explorer, and she loves to burrow, and dig. She took any opportunity to get into ANYTHING, especially my bead case (where I keep my jewelry making supplies), Books, papers, and basically anything else. She was most definitely Bear's Ferret, and if she wouldn't play with him, he'd start to pout until she came over to beat him up. He'd even role over onto his back (a sign of submission) and Tinky would jump onto his stomach and start gnawing on his legs and neck. It's a hilarious sight! This 130 pound dog, taken down by a one pound ferret! Some of her favorite past times included: Beating up on anything that moves, staging ambushes (usually, for me or Raven) where one of the other ferrets will start dooking, and dancing until one of us gets up to play with her, and out of nowhere Tinky would come running, and attached herself to one of our legs, and wouldn't leg go till we hollered at her, and roughed her up a bit. She also enjoyed stealing food, the remote, books, shoes, socks, papers, keys, pencils, well, actually... pretty much anything that wasn't nailed down!
In the very early spring of 2007 I noticed she had a bad case of Diarrhea that didn't want to clear up, so after taking her to the vet and getting some antibiotics which didn't work, the vet ran some tests and couldn't find anything wrong with her and he figured it was age. As she was 7 I couldn't really argue with that. So, as with my beloved L.S. all I could do was keep her happy since she still played with Scampi and was eating and drinking fine. Gradually though, she started loosing weight and while i could tell she still wanted to play she just didn't seem to have any energy. Until early in the morning on April 14, 2007 I went to get her out to hold her and try and coax her to eat some duck soup I found her dead. Needless to say, no matter how prepared you may think you are, it hit me hard, and all I could do was sit there and cry until my wonderful husband gently removed me from in front of the cage, and lovingly interred my baby, my Faerie, the only other ferret to touch me so deeply, next to her sister Rascal. She made such an impression on so many others, everyone who met her, loved her because she was such a happy, friendly ferret. She continued where L.S. left off and changed a great many opinions about Ferrets. I will miss her deeply, and the trust and love she gave me will remain in my heart forever.
