Fine Woodturning by Tony Manella

This is the first (and so far only) plate that I have turned. This red maple burl has some stunning figure to it. It also has the distinct honor of being the first burl that I harvested myself. Of course, I had to do it the hard way. The tree was to be cut down in a couple of weeks but I was impatient and wanted the burl now. The thing was 8' up the trunk and I didn't have a ladder, so I had to stand on toes to reach it with a chainsaw (not something that I would recommend). The plate measures about 8" in diameter. This photo is of the bottom of the plate. It has my usual polymerized tung oil and buffed finish on it.
