Fine Woodturning by Tony Manella

Ah, nothing like a piece of partialy rotted wood to give a turner a challenge. This piece of rotted, wormy, spalted maple was actully cored out of a larger piece. The wood at the top edge was very rotted. After rough turning I applied Minwax wood hardener to try and stabilize the wood to the point that I could finish turn. I was able to get a decent finish on it in the end but the wood had many small holes it in from rotting. I finished this piece with tung oil but didn't like the way it darkened the wood (but my wife loves it). When I turn the rest of what I have I will try a different finish.
