Fine Woodturning by Tony Manella |
I was considering throwing this piece of wood out
because it had cracked before I got to it. Its hard maple though and I don't get a lot of that so I
decided to make the cracks a feature. They are filled with thick CA glue mixed with a product called
Pearlex, which is a powder made from mica stone. The green color is a nice contrast to the dark brown
heart wood. This piece is so thin you can see some light shining through near the base. It did warp
as it dried, but just a little. Its small at just over 4" in diameter and 6" high. To keep the natural
white color of the maple I finished it with Krylon Matte Finish.
