Fine Woodturning by Tony Manella

When I cut this lump off a downed red maple tree I was hoping it would be a large burl that I would make into a bowl. It turned out to be a scab over an old wound. As I was turning I realized that the bark went all of the way through and my chances of success making a bowl were slim. Therefore, it became a hollow vessel measuring 9" in diameter and 8" tall. This is also the first piece that I bleached. It really makes the burl eyes pop and the bark inclusion, which wraps 3/4 of the way around the piece, stand out. As with all of my bleached objects I opted for Krylon Matte Finish.
