Fine Woodturning by Tony Manella |
This vessel is made from staghorn sumac, one
of the most common trees here in the northeast. Its a weed tree that colonizes poor soil areas
on construction sites and road sides. The tree itself has a beautiful architectural form
but its the wood that really shines. The wide growth rings of varying colors really show off
well. This is a small hollow vessel measuring 5" high by
3 1/2" in diameter. I have been experimenting with different rim treatments. This rim
is integral to the vessel and has been gold leafed. The finish is polymerized tung oil.
