Fine Woodturning by Tony Manella

#17 Olive Burl Hollow Vessel

Trading wood with turners around other parts of the country is one of my passions. This piece of olive burl came from an olive grove in California that was being ripped out for a housing development. The wood I traded was not nearly as nice as this so I got the better of that trade. The burl had some cracks and bark inclusions. The piece was turned green, and as most burls do, it has a rippled texture. I carved three feet into the bottom to "lift" the piece off of the table. The piece measures 6" in diameter by 8" high, which is large for me. The finish is polymerized tung oil which was then buffed using the Beal system.
