On 1 October 1866, as a result of his service in the US Army, John was naturalized as a US citizen at the Lehigh County Courthouse, Allentown PA. His brother, Thomas Watt, served with the 67th PA Co D. Thomas died Christmas Day 1891 and is buried at Charles Evans Cemetery at Reading PA. Information from Thomas' great great grandson.

Ignatz Gresser was a German immigrant who arrived in Allentown in 1851 at the age of 15. A cobbler by trade, he was recruited for nine months service on 8/13/1862. Cpl Gresser received the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action with the enemy on 9/17/1862 at Antietam for saving the life of Cpl William Henry Sowden.
