Carbon County,
Pennsylvania
|
|
In proportion to her voting population, Carbon County furnished
more soldiers to the cause than any other county in Pennsylvania. Within 24 hours of
President Lincoln's first call for 75,000 men for 90 days, three companies left for
Harrisburg. Of the soldiers sent to fight the war, 5/8's were killed or wounded in
battle. The official records of the war show twice as many men died of disease than
were killed in battle. However, three times as many soldiers from Carbon County were
killed than died of disease. With so many having given their last full measure, it
can truly be said they served their country honorably and faithfully.

Notes |
|
Lewis Rehrig was from East Penn
Township, Carbon County. He was added to this page with information provided by a
descendant.
Patrick Collins (Callen) was
wounded at Gettysburg 7/2/1863. After capture at Petersburg, he was released 2/17/1865.
Patrick died 4/10/1915 at his home in Nesquehoning PA and is buried beside his brother,
Cpl Hugh Callan (Callen), who served with the
132nd Reg't PA Vols.
They are buried at Nesquehoning Sacred Heart Cemetery. Information from a
great great grand nephew.
John Goodhile of
Palmerton PA enlisted in 1863 and while his records state he was 19, he
was actually 13. Originally enlisted in the 3rd Heavy Art'y, he was
transferred 4/1/1864 to the 188th. He was discharged in 1864 with Typhoid Fever and died in
1921. He was added to this page with information provided by a
descendant.
Andrew
A Graver of Weissport, Carbon County PA, enlisted in 2/15/1865 and was honorably
discharged from service at Lynchburg VA 7/1/1865. He married Catherine
Henry 9/29/1867 at Parryville PA. Andrew died 4/16/1895 at Weissport.
Information from a
family member.
Nathan
Tanner is buried in the GAR cemetery at Summit Hill PA and also led the GAR
unit in Summit Hill for years. Information from a
great
great grandson.
Alexander
Johnson, according to his
great grandson,
was actually Alexander Johnston of Company H, 186th PA Volunteers.
Francis Crilley, served 6/25/1861-7/20/1864; Co E; died 10/24/1913 at Carbon
County; buried Evergreen, East Mauch Chunk PA, Section H, Lot 99. information
from descendant.
James Crilly, served 8/13/1861-9/6/1864 and 1/13/1865-7/9/1865; died at
Carbon County; buried Immaculate Conception, Coalport, Mauch Chunk Twp PA.
Information from
descendant.
Stephen Ziegenfus was added at the request of a
descendant.
Levi Ziegenfus was added at the request of a
descendant.
Patrick Francis Gildea
was added per information from his
great, great grandson. Born 3/17/1841 County Donegal, Ireland, he married Susan Kelly 11/19/1865
and had four
children. After her death, married Mary Fisher 11/27/1918 and they had two
daughters. He is buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery, E. White Street, Summit
Hill.
Jacob Nuss and
Joseph Nuss were sons of John and Catharine Nuss who lived for some time in
the Summit Hill area and later in Weatherly. Joseph (1843 - 1906) is buried in
Union Cemetery in Weatherly. It seems likely that Jacob is the Jacob Nuss who
died at Antietam on 17 Sept 1862 and is buried at the Antietam National
Battlefield Site at Sharpsburg, MD. I can not be positive it is the same Jacob
Nuss (b. 1838), but he was living in the Summit Hill area in the 1860 census
(age 22) and does not appear on any subsequent census anywhere and the rank and
regiment in the burial record is the same.
