Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by President Larry Levy with the Pledge of Allegiance.   In attendance were:  Lorrie Bennick, Teresa McCord, Frank Selgrath, Ray Eichman, Rose Flamini, Peg Grigalonis, Susan Zimmerman, Larry Levy, Kathleen Wufsus, Bill Gill, Sr., Leslie & Bob Richardson, Charlotte Maurey, Joan Goodman.

 Larry asked that members follow the order of business to speed the business portion of the meeting.

Secretary’s Report – the minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved.  The following correspondence was received:  Thank you note from Rose Flamini; letter from PHMC awarding the technical assistance grant; insurance policy and bill from Seltzer insurance; confirmation of a guest speaker from PHC; letter from the Bottle Club advertising their upcoming meeting.  The report was accepted by a motion from Frank Selgrath, seconded by Charlotte Maurey.

Treasurer’s Report – Peg Grigalonis is in receipt of all the treasurer’s books.  Beginning balance was $3,664.  Receipts totaling $ were deposited, which included $1,190 in membership dues and donations and $930 in luncheon tickets.  It was noted that Long Trout Winery, Rose Flamini, Peg Grigaloins, Allison Mucheron (music) and Joan Goodman made donations to the success of the Christmas dinner.  Expenses were $478.98, which included the plaque for Rose Flamini, labels, insurance.   Balance as of 1/27/03 was $5,305.02.  A motion was made by Kathy Wufsus, seconded by Rose Flamini to accept the report.
A motion was made, and approved, to give a Jr. Membership and society T-shirt to Allison Mucheron for her performance at the luncheon.  Teresa will deliver the t-shirt.  Peg requested a meeting to prepare a budget for the museum.  The meeting date will be set following the meeting.

Membership – Teresa updated the list of paid members.  There are 93 paid members, 40 unpaid.  Teresa is sending reminders to unpaid members.  Everyone was reminded that their dues must be paid to vote.

Fund Raising – Larry, Teresa and Chris Milnick are looking to the cost of creating a calendar.  Frank Selgrath asked the society to determine a price to sell the historical picture books.  Frank has donated the first 25 to the Society.  After much discussion, it was decided to sell the books for $15 each.

Property and Artifacts – A letter was received from Jack Kubert stating that the Historical Society will soon be the recipient of the Estelle Barnhart Collection, which consist of 4 (3) ring binder with photos of Mahanoy City activities for a 50+ year period.  8 X 10 photos, program of Mahanoy City schools, events relating to WWI.  The Mahanoy City Alumni Association has also committed to a $500 donation toward the purchase of a table and 2 chairs to use to view the collection.   They have also committed to purchasing a computer for the Society’s use to be stored at the center. Senator Rhoades has also committed to assisting the Society in obtaining additional furniture and display cases for the center.  We will also be able to use tables and chairs from the SCEC for special speakers.

Public Relations – Programs – Lorrie Bennick notified that PHC approved a special guest speaker on Monday, April 28, which will be at the Center.  The speaker is Lance Metz who will do a presentation on "The Mystery in the Molly Maguire Trials".
Larry asked if anyone would like to help with additional public relations duties.  Newsletter items should be submitted to the Society or Lorrie by the February meeting.  Kathleen Wufsus asked for a copy of the PHC speaker guide.  Lorrie said she would request that one be sent to her.  Members also asked if information could be found on the Lenape Indian tribe for a local presentation.
Visitor Centre – The Society can now start occupying the museum area.  Mark Majors of the Sch. Visitors Center still has $1,500 set aside for brochure racks.

Old Business – The society approved paying the liability/property insurance to Seltzer Insurance for $250 for a 6 month period.
The Society will do a presentation in February for the Academy of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  Two presentations will be done, one for K-4 and one for 5-8.  Teresa McCord will be in charge.  Possible subject was the history of churches in Mahanoy Area.
Larry, Susan Zimmerman, and Teresa McCord attended the County coalition meeting.  The historical society coalition is developing a brochure for the county societies.   Mike Kitscok gave a very informative talk on the old pull alarm systems that are in many of the county’s communities.   February 8th is Historical Day at the Schuylkill Mall, volunteers are needed.  Teresa also gave a listing of other upcoming events.  These will be included in the next newsletter.  They also relayed information about the success of Shenandoah’s society selling films about Shenandoah and Schuylkill County.  They sold 1500 copies at a profit of $5 per film.  They also noted that Shenandoah had a poor turnout for the Christmas Church tour.

A motion was made to adjourn by Susan Zimmerman, seconded by Charlotte Maurey.
