TITLE: Innovations in Teaching Mathematics: Developing Algebraic Thinking

LOCATION: University of Pittsburgh Main Campus

DATE: July 12-23, 1999

TIME: Monday through Friday

9:00am - 12:00 noon

COSTS:

DESCRIPTION:

This course, specifically designed for In-service middle grade mathematics teachers, will provide participants with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of mathematics, teaching, and student learning in the middle grades.

Teacher participants will examine narrative cases of real mathematics lessons founded upon an innovative vision of algebra as the study of patterns and functions. Through exploring, discussing and reflecting on the cases, teachers will enhance their understanding of how to engage students in worthwhile mathematical tasks with particular attention to: listening to student thinking, orchestrating discourse, and encouraging high-level thinking and reasoning throughout mathematics lessons.
