Max was originally brought home to be a pen-mate to Elrond. Being the gentle creature that Elrond was, he quickly let the spunky little pup take over his house and lay in the rain. Jolene spent some time mediating the situation, but Max ultimately became a house dog. He did, however, serve as a companion to Elrond and brighten his last years, and became probably the most important pet-member of the family ever. In 2003, the heart problem that he suffered with from time to time, caught up with him. We did several things to try to help him, but after several months of coping, he was suffering and couldn't get around on his own very well any more so we had to make the decision to put him to sleep. The three of us took him to the vet and spent his last moments with him. We had him cremated and his ashes are with us, along with his hair, which we are still finding around the house and on our clothing. In many ways he will never really leave us. He was a very special dog and companion. |
