Agere's research and development organization was born from Bell Laboratories. For 75 years, Bell Labs has been inventing the future. As the world's pre-eminent "idea" laboratory, we are dedicated to creating communications tools for a modern society.

For example, we began the microelectronics industry when we invented the transistor over 50 years ago, and we have continued our pioneering efforts. Just recently, we invented a new vertical transistor, a plastic transistor, and a ballistic transistor.

In 1997, Lucent announced the creation of a new $300 million facility dedicated to the research and development of the next generation of semiconductor manufacturing processes. The Advanced Development and Research Facility (ADRF) opened officially in 2000 at the Cirent Semiconductor facility in Orlando with our scientists and engineers working on innovations such as copper circuitry, cobalt salicide transistors, and new lithography techniques.

What makes the ADRF special is its close proximity and working relationship with the manufacturing team at Cirent Semiconductor. By working together, new semiconductor technologies will be introduced to the market faster.

The ADRF is a separate facility for the purpose of development of advanced semiconductor processes and technologies. It has a unique development tool set to support copper, cobalt salicide and advanced photolithography process development in addition to other prototype equipment for next-generation technologies.
