Rules for People on Dalnet #AmIRC.

There are 2 sets of rules listed here:
  1. Rules & Guidelines that normal Users are to follow.
  2. Rules & Guidelines that Channel Operators are to follow.

Rules for Users on Dalnet #AmIRC.

Rules are few and simple:

At all times:
Please keep all speech in the main channel in the English language.

No flooding:
Repeat CTCP commands are the most common example of flooding. These are simply not allowed under any circumstances. This includes sound files. Another form of flooding, although technically not, is repeating yourself. If you have a question, ask, dont ask over and over again. If someone has an answer for you, they will reply, if not, repeating the question will only get you kicked or banned from the channel. The easiest way to remember this is, almost anything is allowed...in moderation! You want to send a sound file?, Do So, dont send 10 in quick succession. You want to do a Figlet or ASCII art? Do so, dont do them over and over. You want to use a rexx text transfer program?(for example billgates.amirx, part of the Kuangıı package) Do so, but dont do hundreds(A personal hate;-) Use of figlet and/or ASCII art is frowned upon during peak usage time. If there is a lot of chat going on, Don't do figlet or ASCII art. The use of excessive ANSI Colors is not encouraged.

No Begging for OPs:
This will more than likely result in your being kicked and then banned from the channel, so, DON'T ASK!

No Cloning (except under bad netsplits for better connect):
Very simple, No Bots, No duplicates. If you want to test something on yourself, or have a bot, go to another channel!

No language that you wouldn't want your 5-10 year child hearing/reading:
Regardless of weather or not you have kids yourself the rules are the same. NO SWEARING, no excuses, no explanations, a lot of the AOPs have children watching as well as normal users. Recently, an augument was put forward that most children allready know swearwords. This is irrelevant, swearing is not allowed.

No insinuations or inuendoes of a sexually lewd nature (Nicks included):
We dont want to outlaw flirting, we all do it, we all enjoy it, what we dont want is this channel turning into something that should have a series of #!!!!!!!!! in its name ;-). If you have an overwhelming urge to display your feelings to another user, take it into a DCC, the rest of us probably arent interested;-). The reasons for this are the same as for the previous rule.

No Advertising or Mass Invites:
If you have another channel that you want people to join, use the command /invite nick #channel. If they want to join, they will, do not join the channel and tell everyone to join. Also, do not run any mass-invite scripts to invite everybody in the channel to another channel. (Remember the rules on repeat commands)

No Warez (Pirate Software):
No offering, trading or asking for it in #AmIRC will be tolerated. Users who's AmIRC displays *{nick} is a really lame software pirate* will be asked to leave the channel until the hacked keyfile is removed.

Last and final rule:
If you can't abide by the above rules, Don't come to #AmIRC.

We are not running a public service here. This channel was founded back in 1996, and it was very different then. We agree that things have to change, but we would prefer it to change for the better. it is dissapointing that we feel the need has arisen to write a set of rules, but it has, so we are dealing with the problem. Remember, this channel is owned by the AutoOps, under the direction of the SuperOp. You do not have an automatic right to come here, to express any opinion that you might have or to simply do what you feel. We invite everyone in, and are quite happy to allow anyone a degree of freedom. This has been abused a lot recently so we have had to crack down on this unfortunatly.

Remember:
If you Do Not Like the Rules of this Channel, Join another or make your own.

Does this clarify things?

Guidelines for Channel AOPs.

-------------------------------------------------
General Guidelines for Channel Operator's Conduct
-------------------------------------------------
  • Be polite and respectful.  This means other places on the net as well as the channel.
  • Do not use profanity or resort to name calling.
  • Do not criticize or ridicule users. Have patience for typos. Avoid embarrassing a user in front of others.
  • Give users the benefit of the doubt. Ask them to tell you what the problem is if you don't understand what help they need.
  • Restate the issue as you understand it if it is still not clear.
  • State clearly the rule, policy, technique or command requested or needed to provide requested help.
  • State clearly what consequences the individual might expect, if relevant. State, for example, "You may be able to find help with bots on another channel, however bots are not allowed on most DALnet servers without prior approval from the server admin." This way everyone knows what to expect.
  • Remain calm and matter of fact. If you become stressed, upset, or frustrated, you may be less effective or inadvertently exacerbate the situation. It is good to ask someone else to handle the request for you if you find you are unable to remain objective. We need to work as a team, and we all have strengths or weaknesses in some areas. Also, it is important to recognize when we are tired or have other reasons for temporarily diminished performance or sensitive moods. It will be better for DALnet help services in the long run to have Ops who are able to rely on others for assistance than to risk handling a situation badly.
  • Remember that DALnet is an international forum. For many, English is a second language and some colloquialisms and slang may be confusing or misinterpreted. Please try to use grammar and punctuation which will facilitate ease of communication.
  • Try to be sensitive to how others view the role of an Op as well as their expectations of DALnet Help Services. Many of our new users seem to be coming from commercial online services which have "spoon fed" them information. Also, the point and click graphical interface for those services has hidden from their users any information about different servers, ports, commands, etc. They are not new to 'chat', but very new to the chat network technical operation which our users see.

Kick Reasons:
  • Repeated flooding, nuking, or otherwise harrassing users.
  • Repeated swearing, cybersex, and other related acts.
  • Unsolicitated invites or adverts for non-amiga www sites.

Bans are to be used as a next to last resort.
Global Domain/IP Bans are only used as the last resort.
